FROM COMMANDER SHICK
Upon decommissioning in June I will have been aboard for a few days
short of a year. When the ceremony is over and those left go their
separate ways, I'll be very disappointed for I had planned on a longer
tour. TOPEKA was a formidable weapons system and our recent
deployment was highly successful because the crew always got the job
done. Despite technological advances the Navy's only real asset is
people, for without men nothing would function.
We are blessed with a true professional for our "Captain" and
under him became a proficient team, on capable of 'grabbing the brass
ring' time after time. To have worked with such a great group of
officers and men has been an exhilarating experience. The greatest
rewards have been personal contacts at all levels as we made the TOPEKA
function.
The outstanding men of the TOPEKA are too numerous to
mention. However, memories of our trials and tribulations and
innumerable pleasant experiences will never be forgotten. People
are the name of the game, and each of us gives a part of himself to a
ship; many gave a lot to TOPEKA. The dividends reaped from having
played the game with such a fine crew have been immense and I realize
that I received more than I contributed. The many friendships form in
TOPEKA are a priceless commodity and overwhelming compensation.
You have my respect, my admiration and every wish for success in the
future. It has been a privilege to have know and worked with you.
Commander George B. Shick, Jr.
USN, Executive Officer
